The Blue Tits have finally started nest building in the box they were checking out a few weeks ago. There have been a few worrying moments, most notably when the local moggy took an interest and started sitting on top of the box, hence the rather `pointy` screws in the new photo, hopefully these will keep the cats at bay without causing any hurt! Other than that the pair are doing a fine job and will hopefully in time lay some eggs. I will report again with any progress.
I suppose they have to feel absolutely safe before they move in!
ReplyDeleteIncidentally John, this morning I took my twin grandsons (Sonny's cousins) to see Redbridge Lakes, a pair of atificial fishing lakes on some former waste ground. I taught them to identify mallard, moorhens and coots.

Greetings John,
ReplyDeleteSorry I haven't been around much, lately.
Anyway, let's hope the local cats, safely keep their distance and that the Blue Tits get on with their nesting. Here's hoping they will indeed, lay some eggs.
In peace and respect, Gary.
Yes, I imagine those screws would keep one from sitting on top of the box! Eggs soon I hope.
ReplyDeleteThat looks promising John!
ReplyDeleteI have had several distressing incidents in the garden in the past due to a neighbour's killer cat! Most notably a beautiful Song Thrush which had delighted me evening and morning with its song and a nest of baby Robins :(
Hi bazza,
ReplyDeleteBirds like to feel safe before and while they nest, which is why disturbance of nesting birds is illegal.
What lucky kids to have a Grandad like you, I am sure they will remeber what they have been taught.

Hi Gary,
ReplyDeleteApologies are not necessary my friend. I hope they are successful and the cat stays away!

Hi Cat,
ReplyDeleteYes, hopefully they will keep any predator at bay without causing any harm. Will keep you posted.

That`s really sad ShySongbird!
ReplyDeleteApparently over 56 million birds are killed every year by our moggies, a figure that is quite alarming!
Hopefully you will have success in the future!

Fingers crossed that the sharp points do the trick John otherwise it's a double-barrelled ... whoops shouldn't say that!! I also have a very large water pistol sitting on the back step ... just in case the local black and white makes an appearance.
ReplyDeleteHi Frank,
ReplyDeleteHopefully the points will make a difference, I am also hoping it will deter any Grey Squirrel from becoming too curious!
