A male Ruddy Darter in the 'obelisk' position. Dragonflies adopt this pose to regulate heat in their bodies, what is known as 'postural thermoregulation' for any one who is interested! On warm, sunny days these little darters can quite often be seen posing like this.
Do recommend that I stick my behind in the air if I require some thermoregulation John?

I wouldn't recommend it entirely Bazza, but whatever floats your boat! ;)

Postural thermoregulation? Yes, I am interested as I've often seen it but didn't realise what they were doing. If you learn one thing every day I guess I can go back to bed now!
ReplyDeleteThanks John, at least someone is interested in my geekiness! Enjoy going back to bed! ;)

Excellent Darter.

I was going to attempt to translate that terminology into plain english John, but it could sound quite rude.{:))
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't even know what it was in plain English Roy, but I agree, it does sound rude! ;)

Thanks for the scientific explanation John. Super views of the 'bum up' position.
ReplyDeleteThanks Frank, that description is far better than the scientific one!

Fascinating. I never knew that. You learn something new every day.
ReplyDeleteSo they say John! I don't know who 'they' are, mind you! ;)
