The youth of today!

Young ducks and waders are undeniably (and I hate to use the word!) cute. They are just balls of fluff, but are very obviously birds, unlike other birds where the very young look like something from the Jurassic period! On my recent visit to Cley, two species of young bird were in good numbers, Shelduck and Avocet. The photos below are of a group of young Shelduck, very feisty youngsters that were constantly `attacking` the adult Avocets when they got too close and a couple of videos show some young Avocets, a group of three fairly young ones and a single that was nearly fully grown.

All together now, aawww!

  3. Adorable! Gosh, I hope I get to see some of this when in Norfolk in a couple weeks.

Meanwhile, forgive my burdening your post with this, but I saw one, perhaps two, of the bluebird fledges today! Big now, and able to feed themselves, but still standing there, mouths open, demanding (and mom and dad complied). Yippee!

  4. Hi John,
Wouldn't you know it, I left a really long comment and blogspot crashed at that very moment. Didn't even have time to copy and paste and try again.
So, not one to duck out, I just wanted to note that those ducks are adorable and this fowl article was so cute!
And you know what? Folks around here call me "duck", evidently an endearment. Or maybe they are trying to warm me of low-flying objects.
    Take care, my friend.
    Gary. Right then, try again.....

    1. Hi Gary,
      Thank you for trying again!
My Grandad used to call everyone `duck`, it was years before I realised that my Grandmas name was Joyce, not Duck! I am pretty sure that it is a term of endearment, either that or they are constantly throwing things at you! ;)

  6. Young Avocets and Shelducks always look like impressionistic daubs on the canvas that will eventually develop into the immaculate works of art which the adults undoubtedly are. So "Aaaww!"
