Whinchat at Maxey

It must be something to do with Wednesdays. Last week there were two of these superb little birds at my local patch of Maxey pits, but they were gone on Thursday morning. Today, another one of these birds was present, constantly distant and always on the move. I wonder if he will be there tomorrow?

Maxey is looking pretty good at the moment for a nice wader or three, the water levels seem to be under control and so there is a lot of mud exposed, just waiting for something to drop in. As well as the Whinchat, this morning there was a Grey Plover in almost full breeding plumage, a scarcity in these parts, although it was my third one of this year. Always a nice bird to see though, especially in their breeding finery.

Crap photo, great bird!
Hopefully, a sign of good things to come.

I might have to add Maxey Pits to my list of places to visit.

    1. There were indeed Keith! Maxey is well worth a visit, the only problem is that access to the site is permit only, although the site can be viewed from the public main road. If you are thinking of visiting, let me know and I am sure that something can be worked out! :)

  2. Good you got the shot of the Whinchat. I thought I saw my first one yesterday but on closer inspection, it was a female Stonechat. better luck today. This will be out 2 day away bird watching in Southern Ireland.

    1. Thanks Margaret, shame that it wouldn't come any closer though! I would have been chuffed to see a Stonechat, a rarity here this year, I haven't seen one at all!

  5. Two very nice birds to see John. I don't think I've ever seen a Grey Plover! I suppose that's not surprising living where I do though.

    1. Thanks Jenny, hopefully the waders will start to pass through, although they have been a bit thin on the ground so far.
