Red-necked Grebe at Ferry Meadows CP, Peterborough

A bird in winter plumage, hence not really a red neck, but showing ridiculously well close to the visitor centre on Overton lake at Ferry Meadows CP.

Turnstone at Ferry Meadows CP, Cambridgeshire

Not a rare bird nationally, but pretty scarce inland, this Turnstone was found today by Paul Taylor pecking around the small area of shingle by Gunwade Lake in Ferry Meadows CP. As is pretty usual for this species it was pretty approachable, but did object when you got a bit too close.

Goldeneye at Ferry Meadows CP

This first-winter male Goldeneye has been frequenting Gunwade lake at Ferry Meadows CP for the past week or so, hanging out with a flock of Tufted Ducks. Told from the female bird by the white loral spot (the white patch between the bill and eye) as the female has an all brown head. A much more dull bird than a full adult male, but he still has the piercing golden eye from which the bird gets its' name.

Black Terns at Ferry Meadows CP

Two juvenile Black Terns were present at Ferry Meadows CP in Peterborough in the middle of the week, which gave me another chance to catch up with this lovely little marsh tern. This time the sun was shining and the birds much closer than on my sighting of the 6 at Baston, but my efforts are still not as pleasing as I had hoped.
