Early Dragon

Photo taken with Canon Powershot A640

The Four-spotted Chaser dragonfly is supposed to emerge in late May and June, that`s what my field guide says anyway, hence why I was confused when I saw it! The i.d. was confirmed by my friend Brian `The Natural Stone` Stone. Wildlife, however doesn`t read books and will do what it needs to do when the weather and conditions are right.

This dragonfly was present on my recent walk along the Nene Washes and was my first sighting of this type of dragonfly this year.

  5. Missing comments may come back John. Blogger had real problems and missing stuff is being restored - slowly.
That's a few reports I have seen of dragons about. Nothing seen here yet. The Blue-tailed Damsels which use my pond started appearing on 25th May last year.

  6. Hi John,
Since posting this `Early Dragon` I have seen dozens of Four-spots about, it has obviously been just the right conditions for them! I have yet to see any others, but I know from friends that they are about.

  9. Hi ShySongbird,
Yes, I was talking to somebody the other day who is a warden on a local reserve and he was saying that he thinks some stuff is as much as a month early due the warm, dry weather! Is this a sign of things to come, I wonder?
