Some Butterflies

Hand-held Canon Powershot A640

Just a few shots of some of the butterflies seen on a recent visit to the Nene Washes RSPB with my Dad.

The sun was out and although the birds were scarce there were plenty of butterflies feeding on the thistles. Nothing out of the ordinary, but it was good to see fairly good numbers of Skippers, Green-veined and Small Whites, Small Tortoiseshells and Meadow Browns.

  4. When birds are scarce (or even if not), butterflies are always a lovely subject, and you've got some nice shots here. More than that, you know their names!

  5. I tried photographing some butterflies in Norfolk, where I was this week. It's a bit of a waste of time without the right equipment!

  6. Lovely photos again John. I particularly like the first one of the Skipper. That first Small Tortoiseshell was looking a bit worn!

  7. Dear John,
beautiful pictures, thank you! I tried to "catch" a butterfly with my camera and found it really difficult - they are so unpredictable!

  12. Hi Susan,
Thankyou. I am lucky in the fact that I have a good field guide! Having said that, trying to differentiate between the Skippers is still a problem for me!

  13. Hi Bazza,
Photographing butterflies can be frustrating, but you don`t have to have huge big lenses and expensive cameras, mine is just a point and shoot pocket camera!

  14. Hi Jan,
Thankyou. Yes, I was quite pleased with the first shot. The Small Tortoiseshell was a bit worn, but was still feisty enough when it came to seeing off other Tortoiseshells!

  15. Hi Britta,
Thankyou. Butterflies are temperamental things, sometimes they will sit still for ages and then as soon as you focus on them they fly off!
