Blue Tit

We have a nest box fixed to our house which I won in a spin the wheel type of competition at the British Bird Fair a couple of years ago. It was the `top` prize at the Bird Watching magazine stand. Up until this spring it has stood empty and I had toyed with the idea of moving it, but along with one thing and another, I just never got around to it.

I am glad that I didn`t as this year we have had the `cheep` of young Blue Tits coming through our kitchen window as we stand at the sink washing up. The shots below show one of the young waiting for the adult to return with a tasty morsel or two, but I am sure that he is wondering what bird he is, although I don`t think birds can read!

Just in case there is any concern over the birds identity, here comes Mum or Dad just to let the youngster know!

    1. Thanks Eileen, they are pretty birds, although the adult is looking a bit bedraggled now!

  2. I think there must have been something wrong with mum and dad's eyesight John when they choose the box or they have feelings of grandeur.{:)

    1. Yes, although I did see a Great Tit checking the box out before these Blue Tits moved in, maybe he was `guzzumped`! ;)

  3. Sweet! So near - you are lucky!
(My dentist complained: the tits had built their nests into the insulation of the roller shutter of his house - cost him a lot - now he will look in spring, putting sort of plastic rolls in. I told him that I had often observed a second breed in August).

    1. Hi Britta, lucky to see nature in action I suppose! :)
I am sure that your dentist can afford the repairs, if they are anything like the ones in Britain, they are never short of a few quid!

    1. Hi Jan,
Thank you. I think that, yet again I have missed them fledge, the box has gone quiet since I put this post up, but time will tell.

  5. Congrats on the win, and the Blue Tits. How wonderful to hear them sing as you wash the dishes! (If you catch one with a paint brush, covering up the word 'great', we'll know they can read after all!)

    1. Hi Omi,
Thank you, yes it is/was good to hear them. I think that they are just content in trying to scratch the words out (the metal plate is a bit marked from all their comings and goings!).

  7. How blissful to hear and watch the babies as you do the washing up. It certainly would encourage me. As it is, I'm constantly running out of the kitchen while washing up to snag the binoculars and see what's going on in our two occupied houses down the hill. Both the tree swallow and bluebird box appear active, so I am hoping . . .

    1. Hi Susan,
We don`t really have that big a garden, as we can see the end from our kitchen window (it`s only a few feet away!).
I am looking forward to your photos of the swallow and bluebird young, cross fingers! ;)

    2. There likely won't be photos, as they're in boxes out in the open down our hill, and I can't get close enough to snap them without them seeing me first. But, I will report, and yes, fingers crossed.

  10. This is a lovely story of patience rewarded but in the nick of time. I have scruffy fledglings on the windowsill both blue tits and great tits. Great photos. Delightful.
