Great White Egret at Maxey

Another trial with the new camera. This time with a bird that has been hanging around the local area for a while now, but time constraints have meant that I have been unable to catch up with this large white heron. That changed on Monday, with the weather being awful and so, not conducive to gardening and with the bird being reported from Maxey, my local patch.

It was first seen on the Maxey Cut, in the company of a couple of Little Egrets, but then flew to the adjacent field, where it stood and preened for a while. It then took flight and went out of view.

Again, not the greatest, but a `record` shot of this addition to my PBC year list.

  2. I love this photo - and have never seen a white heron (the grey ones often).

    1. Thank you Britta,
Yes, the Grey Heron is a lot more common, in fact there was one in the field with the Great White Egret.

  3. A very distinctive bird in every way but extremely beautiful.
I have seen Little Egrets and, of course, frequent Grey Heron around this area.

    1. Hi Bazza,
Very distinctive and a lot bigger than Little Egret, almost double the size. Little Egrets were once very rare in this country, maybe, their larger cousins will become as 'common'?

  4. I saw one recently at Fen Drayton Lakes. It stood very close to a Grey Heron and a Little Egret so allowed a good comparison. Lovely birds especially when the sun catches their plumage as they fly up.

    1. Hi John,
Yes, I saw that one had been reported from Fen Drayton. It's always useful when birds are accommodating and stand next to something to allow a comparison!

  5. Great stuff John. Better than I've ever managed. They see me coming and all I see is some rapidly vanishing tail feathers ;)

    1. Thanks Lou Mary,
Until you see one, you don't realise how big they are.
