Waxwing
Waxwings have been a bit thin on the ground this winter, but with one turning up at not too far off Corby, I decided to pay a visit on Sunday before seeing my Mum for Mothers' Day.
The bird had been seen in what is quite a usual spot for Waxwings, an industrial estate/retail park, frequenting a hawthorn tree just outside a pub. On arrival the bird was nowhere to be seen, but within 10 minutes it was showing remarkably well in said tree, feeding and even calling at times. The weather and light were dull and dreary, but I managed a few photos of what was my first bird of this species since the 'invasion' a couple of years ago.

Great shots John. I think we have had some Easterly winds recently that may have sent them over.
ReplyDeleteThanks Roy! There have been a couple more reports just lately, maybe one will turn up even more locally!

They are one of my favourite birds. I managed to see a single bird a few weeks bark in Manchester. Great shots you managed to get too.
ReplyDeleteThanks Adam! And thanks for the 'Follow'!

One of my favorites! They usually swoop in in flocks here and it's always a delight as we really don't have any berry trees to attract them on our property. His coloring really stands out against the sky, grey or not!
ReplyDeleteHi June! It is a great sight to see large numbers of Waxwings, a couple of winters ago I managed to see a flock numbering over 150, what a sight!

Fantastic images! We did not have any Waxwings where we are this year either. (Wiltshire/Berkshire borders). Such wonderful birds.
ReplyDeleteThanks LeeAnn! Yes, not many about at all! Maybe next winter!?

I've had no local reports this winter....I remember I was sat having a lie in while it turned out there was a flock of twenty of them making merry in a tree 200 yards away
ReplyDeleteOops! Hope you got to see them Simon!

Hi John. This must one of the most easy-to-recognise birds in the UK! I love the 'caught in act' first photo particularly.
ReplyDeleteHi Bazza! Thank you, yes definitely 'one of a kind'!
