Garden Brambling

Yesterday, after work I just happened to look out of the kitchen window and see this lovely male Brambling perched in the hazel in our garden. On further inspection a second was revealed! This is the first time that we have had more than one of these finches in our back garden and the first one noted for a couple of years.

The photo above was taken at about 3.45 in the afternoon through a double-glazed window, so not the sharpest photo ever taken, but I hope it shows the lovely colours and pattern of this Scandinavian visitor.

Number 176 for my PBC year list. Will I make it to 180?

  1. What a lovely bird. Amazing capture through a window too. I'd love to get this close to one of these.

    1. Thank you Minerva! I don't think the bird would like you getting too close! ;)

  2. Well captured John! Such pretty and colourful little birds. I have been lucky enough to see them in my garden in the last few Winters and they really are a joy to see. I hope I get some this year and I hope yours stop around for a while too.

    1. Thanks Jan,
You are lucky to have them regularly in your garden. Apparently, this is the year when they are going to be more common in gardens because of the lack of beech mast in the woodland where you would normally find them.

  5. You have so many wonderful birds over there, John! A garden brambling - sound to me like bramble (as in the books Brambly hedge :-), and the bird reminds me of a finch. Never saw one of that lovely colour over here (but I think I saw some in almost green feathers).

    1. We do indeed Brigit, we are lucky. The bird is indeed a type of Finch, closely related to the Chaffinch. The one you saw could have been a Greenfinch, as the name suggests, they have green feathers.

  6. Lovely background scene. Fortunately it showed by itself for a few seconds before the rest loaded,
Great to see the Brambling visiting.
