Yellowhammer

Peek-a-boo!

  1. That's cute! The word 'hammer' is in German very similar: we call that bird a (Gold)Ammer.

  3. At first I thought that was a giant Yellowhammer hidden behind a wall, then I got the perspective right! A great and fun photo! (-:

  5. I thought exactly the same as Jenny except my brain still won't get the perspective right!! A fun if (to me) rather disconcerting photo John. Lovely, colourful little birds which usually play peek-a-boo between twigs with me ;-)

    1. Sorry to make you feel disconcerted Jan, that wasn't the object of the photo, it was meant to be a bit of fun.
They normally fly away from me at the slightest movement, so I was glad to get some sort of shot.

    2. It definitely is fun John, makes me smile every time I look at it. It still looks to me like it's hiding behind a wall in one of those miniature model villages though ;-)

    3. I am glad you find it 'fun' Jan, I may take a 'normal' photo of a Yellowhammer at some point?

  6. I have always found the old concrete pill boxes so ugly but now you have shown they have their uses and this photo is so delightful BUT the former opinion still applies regardless!

    1. Hi Cuby! We have quite a lot of pill boxes in our area, this one is used by all sorts of farmland birds as a staging post for feeding, Corn Buntings, Linnets and Reed Buntings, as well as the Yellowhammer. In other parts of the country there are some that are used as bat roosts. I have to agree with you though, they aren't the most attractive buildings.
