Glossy Ibis at Lowdham

Whilst in the county of Nottinghamshire we thought that it would be rather rude not to visit this rather showy Glossy Ibis that has taken to frequenting a cow field by a busy main road. Many birders parking on this road added to the chaos, but the bird showed well and after finding a way across some rather smelly, muddy fields I managed to get fairly close to a bird that used to be pretty rare in this country, but is becoming an annual visitor.

  1. Well it's rather lovely but of course the Australian White Ibis were ten-a-penny in Sydney (just showing off!)

    1. Now that is just showing off Bazza! I think if one of those turned up in the U.K. you wouldn't be able to move for twitchers!

    1. Hi Grace,
Thank you. They aren't overly common in Britain and this is the first time that I have managed to get fairly close to one, enabling half-decent shots!

  4. Hope you enjoyed our smelly muddy fields. Just there they are known as the dumbles.

  5. Lovely looking bird well captured John. It looks very small when photographed against the watchers.

  6. Thanks John,
They are not that big, almost half the size of a Grey Heron, about the size of a Little Egret.

  7. Fantastic shots of the ibis! I've only seen one once and it was as it flew over our heads!

    1. Thanks Lou Mary!
They are still not at all common here, just getting a bit more regular.
