Long-eared Owl at Deeping Lakes NR
It's that time of year again when there is a roosting Long-eared Owl on the island at Deeping Lakes nature reserve in south Lincolnshire and once again it is a nightmare to see and photograph. The above photograph is obviously pretty well cropped, but the bird can be picked out by looking up and to the left from the piece of wood at the bottom of the photo, useful when viewing the island from the hide which is at quite a distance!

Still worth the shot though, John.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mike! Wish he was more in the open, but then Long-eared Owls don't do that do they!?

We have five of them roosting in a hedge near here on a cycle path. Have I seen them? Have I hell!
ReplyDeleteTheir cryptic camouflage is superb isn't it?! There are now three birds on the island, haven't been to see them yet though.

Fab - we saw this beastie last Tuesday, and were lucky enough to beg a view from someone telescope! My photo is less clear than yours. In fact I was misled by a pigeon below it and to the left!
ReplyDeleteThe pigeon is a good guide when looking for the owl though! There are now three owls present, so well worth another visit.

I'm yet to even come across an owl in the wild so well done here!
ReplyDeleteThanks Liz! I suppose I am lucky in that I see 5 species of owl in the U.K. most years, I sometimes forget that.

You did well to get such a clear shot, John. There were three owls on the island this morning - the liveliest in exactly the same spot as yours (but largely hidden by foliage).
ReplyDeleteI've found that this roost is so well known but the owls so difficult to spot that they bring out our most sociable side.
Thanks Jonathan!
DeleteYes, this roost is known nationally I think, with even the great LGRE paying a visit!

ReplyDeleteIf you Google 'Deeping Lakes, Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust', I am sure that directions will come up.
