They seem to be very adept at creating all kinds of weird and wonderful positions in order to get a berry or two.

    1. Thanks Phyllis,
It's a shame when people chop down trees without a reason, without them, you definitely won't see many birds.

  6. Hey John,

Beautiful and problem solved. I turned myself upside down to look at the waxwings. Had a heck of time typing this :)

  9. These are lovely seasonal photos with charm added to your usual expertise.
They remind me of the squirrels that hang upside down from my rose bushes trying to reach the bird table!

    1. Hi Bazza,
Thank you, shame there isn't any snow in the background.
Squirrels, too, are very acrobatic, no matter what you do to try and stop them nicking your bird food, they find a way to get at it!

  11. Lovely captures John. I'm very envious having tried in vain, all last week, to find a small local flock.

I also enjoyed your previous Starling post. They really are a spectacular sight!

    1. Thanks Jan,
I am sure that you will get to see a flock soon, they are everywhere at the moment. They do move on very quickly though, the birds in the photos above were present for a few days and numbered over 140, but as soon as the trees had been stripped of the berries, they were off!
Thank you for your kind words about my Starling post. They are an amazing sight, maybe the flock will grow over the winter?! I am sure that they will be featuring in another post, sooner or later.

  12. Great photos! I loved this flock - watched them on the wednesday (and got incredibly close!) and caught them twice on the thursday... they spent some time in Dukesmead also. What a stunning bird.

    1. Thanks Dan,
I didn't realise that they were in Dukesmead too. We were lucky to be able to view them so closely and in such numbers. Will they make another appearance in Werrington this winter, I wonder?!

    2. You never know! I think it was almost 2 years to the day that they turned up there and they were back in Werrington over the new year period that year... fingers crossed right?!

  14. The pink ones, John, I do want the pink ones!!
They are so beautiful - and of course need their freedom, so put away the butterfly net :-)
I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

    1. Hi Britta,
The pink berries seem very popular with the Waxwing, it is a type of Rowan, not sure of its full name.
The same to you and your family.
